Inspectors want a detector in every bedroom, one outside each sleeping area, and one on every level including the basement. Carbon monoxide belongs near sleeping rooms and on each habitable floor. In most sales, renovations, and rental turnovers that means hardwired, interconnected units with battery backup, not a lone 9-volt puck. Combination smoke + CO units are fine in most of those spots. We leave you the paperwork buyers and landlords use for the municipal smoke/CO certificate. Replace smoke alarms about every 10 years and CO sensors sooner (often 5–7). The date is on the back of the unit. Chirping at 2 a.m. is usually a dying backup cell or an expired head, not a new circuit.
On an existing 3-wire interconnect we swap heads and test that one smoke sets off the whole house. Battery-only houses get a new run and listed heads — photoelectric or combo, not bargain ionization-only units in the kitchen if you can avoid the burnt-toast nuisance trips. Smart jobs we actually hang: Kidde, First Alert Onelink, Google Nest Protect, or a Ring listener on a conventional system. Hush-button and battery-backup are standard. Simple head swaps usually do not need a permit. A new hardwired circuit does; we pull it. Jackson, Toms River, Brick, Lakewood, Howell, Freehold, Point Pleasant, and Manahawkin are the usual Ocean and Monmouth stops. Coastal rentals get extra attention before the season because expired heads fail the sale inspection.
