How is a Panel swap is not a service upgrade?

A panel swap is a new can and breakers at the same ampacity. A 200A service upgrade is the can plus meter pan, service-entrance cable or lateral, grounding electrodes, and a utility disconnect/reconnect. Homeowners compare a $2,200 swap quote to a $4,500 service quote and think someone is lying.

They are different jobs.We price after photos of: panel label, interior, meter, and whether the drop is overhead or underground.

Who cuts the power:

We file the utility ticket. You do not call the 800 line and hope.

Why You Probably Need a Panel Upgrade

nj home at dusk with every visible room lit up seen from outside

Most homes built before 2000 only have 100 or 150 Amp service. Today’s homes need 200 Amps minimum.

Common Reasons for Upgrading:

When is 100A is still enough for my NJ home?

Gas heat, gas water, gas range, one AC, no EV, no hot tub: a lot of 100A services pass a real NEC 220 load calc. We will say so. We will not sell 200A because a blog said “minimum today.”

200A when any two of these are true: Level 2 EV, heat pump or electric heat, electric range + dryer, hot tub, second AC, addition.

400A is dual equipment or a big house with solar + EV + heat pump — not a default.

🚨What if my home has a recalled or dead panel brand?

For FPE Stab-Lok, Zinsco, Pushmatic, fuse boxes we strongly reccomend: replace the panel. New breakers in a dead brand are not a repair. Insurers and resale inspectors flag these in Ocean and Monmouth every week.

We hang Square D QO, Eaton CH, or Siemens. Leviton smart / SPAN only if you asked for app-level control — that is extra gear, not the 200A job.

What the service day of your upgrade looks like

  1. Permit first. Utility cut. Power off 4–8 hours on a clean overhead 100→200.
  2. If theres a underground, tight garage, or a mast that has to move: plan a second visit.
  3. Inspector, then utility restore.
  4. Food in the fridge survives; work-from-home does not without a plan.

Will the house be dark all weekend?

One working day if JCP&L/PSE&G show up. The calendar is the utility, not the screwdriver.

Our Panel Upgrade Process

Typical Service Costs (Ocean / Monmouth, 2026)

JobExpected Cost
Same-amp panel replacement $1,800–$3,000
100A → 200A, overhead, accessible $2,800–$4,800
+ new meter pan / riser / SE cable additional $800–$1,800
Underground lateral or tight indoor $4,500–$7,000+
200A → 400A quoted after load and utility

Permit is in the township fee schedule ($75–$400). Not optional. Federal 25C credit up to $600 only if the upgrade is tied to a qualifying efficiency load (EV, heat pump, etc.) — we do not promise it on a straight safety swap.

Service call to look: $175 truck, credited if we do the upgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 200 Amp panel upgrade cost in New Jersey?

Most homeowners pay between $2,500 and $4,500. We provide free on-site quotes for accurate pricing.

Do I need a permit to upgrade my electrical panel?

Yes. All panel upgrades require permits and inspections. We handle everything for you.

How long does a panel upgrade take?

Most residential upgrades take 1–2 days. Power is usually off for 4–8 hours.

Will upgrading my panel allow me to install an EV charger?

Yes. A 200 Amp panel is recommended for safe EV charger installation.

Can you upgrade my panel and install a generator at the same time?

Absolutely. We offer package pricing for combined projects.

What brands of panels do you install?

We work with Square D, Siemens, Eaton, and Leviton (smart panels).

Do I need a new meter?

If we change ampacity, usually yes. Same-amp swap sometimes keeps the pan if it is listed and tight.

FPE / Zinsco — can you just put in new breakers?

No we cannot.

Do I need a Smart panel?

Only if you want circuit-level app control. A QO or CH 200A does the upgrade.
