A standby unit sits on a pad, ties to natural gas or propane, and an automatic transfer switch (ATS) throws the house off the utility when JCP&L or PSE&G dies. A portable plus an interlock on the panel is legal backup for selected circuits.
14–22 kW covers most Ocean/Monmouth ranches if the service is 200A and the wish list is HVAC + well/sump + kitchen + a few lights. A 22 kW air-cooled on a 100A panel is a waste — the can is the limit. Heat pump + dryer + EV + whole-house AC is often 24 kW+ liquid-cooled or a load-shed module. We run a load calc. Square footage alone is not a size.
Natural gas: runs as long as the street has gas. Meter and pipe size have to carry the extra CFH — a ½-inch branch will starve a 22 kW unit. Propane: tank size sets runtime (a 500-gallon is days, not weeks if you are heating). We coordinate a licensed gas fitter when the pipe is new. We do not pretend the electrical license covers the gas main.
Pad (or composite), set the unit, ATS at the panel or a separate enclosure, gas tie-in, start-up, exercise timer. Power blinks while the ATS lands. Clean overhead 200A house: 1–2 days after permits. Permit wait is the long pole (1–3 weeks by town). Someone has to be home.
Gas line from the street and a new 200A service are not in the generator number. Annual service is a separate ticket.
A: Most homeowners pay $7,500 – $14,000 installed (including ATS and concrete pad). Free quotes available.
A: Yes. We handle all electrical and building permits with your local township. Electrical permit is needed for the ATS, feeder, and grounding. Gas/plumbing permit if we touch the meter or run a new line. Zoning/setbacks are the town’s: exhaust away from windows and intakes (manufacturer clearance, often 5 ft+, not “behind the AC because it looks neat”). Survey helps. HOA is your problem until they stamp it. Utility: JCP&L on most of our loop, PSE&G farther north. They do not “install the generator.” They care if we change the service.
A: We perform a free load calculation. Most average NJ homes need 16–22 kW.
A: Yes with proper sizing. We design systems that can run AC, well pumps, and more.
A: Annual professional maintenance is strongly recommended to ensure reliability when you need it most.
A: We hang Generac, Kohler, Cummins, Briggs when the size and the warranty match. Brand is not the first decision. kW and fuel are.
A: Natural gas is more convenient (unlimited supply). Propane is better if natural gas is unavailable.
