What Does my Scotch Plains house actually need?

Scotch Plains is not Summit’s 1880s resort stock. Most calls are 1950s–1970s Colonials and split-levels on 100A, plus older downtown houses with cloth wiring still in the walls. Newer infill already has 200A and wants a charger. We open the panel before we call it a rewire.

Who Handle the Permits?

Utility is PSE&G. A service change is their cut plus a town permit. Electrical permits go through Scotch Plains Building Department, 430 Park Avenue, Monday–Friday 8:30–4:00. Electric inspection is typically Tuesday and Thursday morning, not “we’ll meet the inspector whenever.” We pull the permit. Ordinary device swaps often do not need one. A new circuit, panel, or service does.

Common Things Customer Contact us for

100A to 200A when the AC, dryer, and a 40–60A charger will not share the can. GFCI trips on a shared neutral. Fan on a box rated only for a light. Federal Pacific or Zinsco: replace the panel, do not hunt a breaker. Fanwood, Westfield, and Plainfield are the towns that usually share the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you in Scotch Plains?

No. Jackson shop. But we do have other trucks that are stations nearby. Scotch Plains is a scheduled day, often with Fanwood or Westfield.

Who cuts the power on a heavy-up?

PSE&G. We do not book the town inspection before they have a cut date.

Where is the permit filed for local electrical work?

430 Park Avenue. We file it.

Knob-and-tube?

Less common service we do than in Summit area. If it is live, we replace or isolate the circuit the insurer named.
