Yes as a lot of Wayne houses from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s my techs say have typically 1 of 2 problems, sometimes both. Aluminum branch wires. The cable in the walls is aluminum, not copper. It was legal then. The trouble is at the devices: aluminum expands and shrinks, the screw loosens, the connection heats up. You see it as a warm switch, a light that flickers, or a breaker that trips for no clear reason. Tightening the screw is not a fix. It loosens again. The real options are a listed connector (AlumiConn-style) at each device, or running new copper from the panel to that room. Swapping the receptacle for a “CO/ALR” device by itself is not a whole-house solution. No ground, or a fake ground. Many of those houses were wired with two-wire cable (hot and neutral, no ground). Someone later put on a three-prong outlet so a plug would fit. That does not mean there is a ground. A tester can lie if the tab in the box is bootlegged to neutral. We pop the outlet, look at the cable, and tell you if it is two-wire, a real ground, or a jumper that should not be there. Kitchens, baths, garages, and outdoors need GFCI protection when there is no ground. That is code. It is also what a buyer’s inspector flags. We do not “tighten it and hope.” We open the panel and a few devices, then price either device-by-device remediation or new copper homeruns. You get that in writing before we cut anything.
